MIDI 2.0
Crazy stuff, but the MIDI Manufacturer's Association is prototyping a new evolution of the MIDI standard, dubbed MIDI 2.0. https://www.midi.org/articles/the-midi- ... rototyping

Re: MIDI 2.0
Very neat! I don't expect it will have all these features for older devices, like our beloved MT-32's, but since this process is going forward so openly (anyone can join the MMA for free as I had, hoping to add aftertouch support to Rosegarden someday), I expect that there's a high chance GNU/Linux users won't be left wanting. This page details more reason for the new adoption and looks like an exciting possibility: https://www.midi.org/articles-old/midi- ... cification. I don't imagine the interoperability will exist beyond just falling back to MIDI 1.0 for older devices, as they just won't answer the "universal" SysEx. I suppose there could be MUNT support, though!Marten wrote: ↑Mon Jan 21, 2019 1:20 am Crazy stuff, but the MIDI Manufacturer's Association is prototyping a new evolution of the MIDI standard, dubbed MIDI 2.0. https://www.midi.org/articles/the-midi- ... rototyping

Re: MIDI 2.0
So it's January 2020 and Roland announces a "MIDI 2.0 ready" keyboard controller: The A-88MkII.

Good to see MIDI is alive and kicking in 2020.

Re: MIDI 2.0
Yes, I saw a youtube video of it recently because I'd just decided to finally buy a good keyboard, and had settled on the original Roland A-80: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6IDIA0xk1k). It sounds nice, but I'm still glad I got the original for the polyphonic aftertouch that nobody seems to want to produce nowadays. I probably won't ever have equipment supporting that feature either. (Edit 2/17/2020: Sure I do, all Sound Canvas models do, and are configured through SysEx, such as this which enables a sort of tremolo on channel 1: F0 41 10 42 12 40 21 36 7F 6A F7; it's especially fun using with MT-32 variations on the SC-55.) Anyway, it is interesting to me that Roland seems to be recreating their best stuff, or at least what I happen to be watching.Ari wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2020 2:20 am So it's January 2020 and Roland announces a "MIDI 2.0 ready" keyboard controller: The A-88MkII.
