Very neat! I don't expect it will have all these features for older devices, like our beloved MT-32's, but since this process is going forward so openly (anyone can join the MMA for free as I had, hoping to add aftertouch support to Rosegarden someday), I expect that there's a high chance GNU/Linux users won't be left wanting. I don't imagine the interoperability will exist beyond just falling back to MIDI 1.0 for older devices, as they just won't answer the "universal" SysEx. I suppose there could be MUNT support, though! It's okay, I never have difficulty using MIDI as it exists now. Also, the SC-8820 and SC-8850 (and newer Roland devices) have supported "General MIDI2" for years, but it can't be the same thing. I doubt they support all the "2.0" SysEx planned, but they do support "universal" SysEx messages of their own (and Yamaha's) understanding.

Yes, I saw a youtube video of it recently because I'd just decided to finally buy a good keyboard, and had settled on the original Roland A-80: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6IDIA0xk1k). It sounds nice, but I'm still glad I got the original for the polyphonic aftertouch that nobody seems to want to produce nowadays. I probably won't ever have equipment supporting that feature either. (Edit 2/17/2020: Sure I do, all Sound Canvas models do, and are configured through SysEx, such as this which enables a sort of tremolo on channel 1: F0 41 10 42 12 40 21 36 7F 6A F7; it's especially fun using with MT-32 variations on the SC-55.) Anyway, it is interesting to me that Roland seems to be recreating their best stuff, or at least what I happen to be watching. MIDI 2.0 would be neat to try, but it would be an expensive undertaking, and I expect my late-adoption of the latest technology will have to continue. It is wonderful MIDI is getting a visible refresh, though.
